For young adults, having a healthy, fun social life is just important as having a career. The young adults at Fairway have identified this as the main area that needs improvement and where they need support. Young people with additional support needs say they are socially isolated and have very little social outlet outwith their family and carers.
Fairway aims to change this for the young people it serves by inviting young adults that are able to socialise and travel independently to volunteer as peer mentors to the young adults. Your young adult with additional support needs will take part in everyday activities that young people without additional support needs take for granted.
Very quickly, you will begin to see the progression within their confidence, self- esteem, their social interaction, and communication skills. They will also take a more independent and active role in starting to organise and arrange meeting up their friends through developing their own friendship circle.
The fairway facilitator will help your young adult to identify whom they see as their friends. The facilitator would then help the young adult design their own invitation for their first circle telling their friends the date, time, and venue to meet. The facilitator would support the young adult to their circle and remain in the background not encroaching on the young adult’s night but being there for any support they require.
