PROFESSIONALS - CAMPAIGNS & EVENTS
The Fairway Project team continually strives to raise public awareness of the issues, imbalances and struggles that young people with additional support needs encounter.
Through workshops run by a local theatre company, Fairway’s young people explore issues that are in their lives, and explore the rewards and consequences of their aspirations. As a result, they have developed a strong, confident message about transition, about the importance of having dreams and aspirations and their right to have them no matter what label society attaches to them.
Having been asked to give a presentation to the “Scottish Parliament” in the spring of 2007, it seemed the ideal opportunity for the audience to hear from young people, rather than professionals about moving towards adulthood. The young people themselves looked forward to speaking directly, and powerfully, to those who would influence the future direction of disability services.
The Fairway young people were invited to share their message with the Scottish Care Commission, Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disabilities, the Scottish Union for Supported Employment and their local community in Ayrshire. Most importantly, the format of the presentation allowed the audience to hear the voices of young people that are often unheard amidst the confusion and uncertainty of formal planning processes
‘The Fair Way’ is an inspiring presentation that highlights not only the challenges & difficulties that young people with additional support needs face on the path to adulthood – but also the optimism and confidence that their future lives will be rich and meaningful. It also highlights the changes required for these young people to take their rightful place in society. It is presented by Fairway young adults, peer mentors, and young actors. This powerful message was shared across Scotland over a period of six months. As a result of the impact of this presentation, Fairway have been invited to present at many events over the years and most recently, asked to do a presentation on ‘dignity in care’ at this year’s Care Commission Forum.
